A little bit about the album.

Writing by Clayman A.

When I was recording my first album “WORLD’S NO.1 SPIRIT” I was living on the east side of Harlem with my sister & a few of her classmates (each paying six-hundred-something dollars a month). 2022-2023.

We were on the third floor of walk-up. The first floor was a deli (the only one in the area that stayed open past 8pm). Probably because our neighborhood got weird at night. Tweakers groaning louder than I thought humanly possible on the street below our bathroom window. Somehow, someone down the street had access to a machine-gun & used it pretty often in the middle of the night. Our upstairs neighbor had elephantitus & required a 24 hour caretaker.

I found this 3-legged Ikea desk on the side of the road and ordered some $40 USB mic off Amazon that came with a stand. I started working a job making perfume for people. With my first paycheck, I bought my first synthesizer: a Korg I had been wanting for ages. I used it to produce this whole album.

I set up my “studio” inside the bedroom. I had this little window that looked directly over to my (other) neighbors little window in their kitchen. I never saw what they looked like, but we would both leave the windows open for ventilation. This really unique smell would waft over from their place. It wasn’t organic, certainly not any type of food. The smell was sharp, metallic & smokey. Kind of like a thousand computers overheating at once. It didn’t bother me much, so I would sit there and record in it for hours & hours at a time. I was so excited to finish the project, I felt it so strongly.

In the final stages of recording, I was talking with the deli man. I was telling him about the smell. He told me that the 4th floor renters are big meth suppliers. I spent the last year high on second-hand meth, recording the best music I had ever made. Every time I listen to these songs, it brings me right back to Harlem in a beautiful, nostalgic way. I will never go back there again.
